Known as "L’Aiguilleuse," a former 1960s railway signal box has been thoughtfully renovated and converted into a lively kiosk-bar. Designed by Studio Téré, the project successfully bridges the gap between the site’s storied past as a bustling transport hub and its contemporary role as an inviting, community-focused green space for urban residents and visitors alike.

Originally constructed as part of the extensive Nantes-État railway infrastructure, the compact building once played a critical role in local transit operations. Decades ago, railway workers stationed inside the signal box meticulously controlled train movements, managing the complex network of tracks and switches that guided locomotives as they approached the bustling station. It was a utilitarian structure born out of necessity, engineered for function rather than aesthetics, characterized by the robust construction methods typical of mid-20th-century industrial architecture.

Over time, however, the urban landscape surrounding the tracks underwent a dramatic transformation. As modern transportation networks evolved and urban planning priorities shifted, the railway infrastructure that once defined the area gradually disappeared. Tracks were removed, old industrial parcels were cleared or rezoned, and the once-thriving rail yard faded into memory. Yet, amidst these sweeping changes, the small signal box managed to survive. Left behind as a solitary, unassuming fragment of the site’s industrial history, the building stood as a tangible link to the Île de Nantes’ past—a quiet monument to the generations of workers who kept the city’s economic engines running.

Recognizing the architectural and historical value of preserving such local landmarks, urban planners and designers set out to integrate the solitary signal box into the master plan for the Jardins de l’Estuaire. Rather than erasing this piece of industrial archaeology to make way for completely new park amenities, the project team envisioned a sensitive adaptive reuse strategy. Studio Téré was tasked with breathing new life into the structure, transforming a defunct, closed-off control room into an open, welcoming hospitality venue that could serve as a social anchor for the new public park.

The resulting transformation, captured expertly in photographs by Nina Ducleux, respects the building’s modest scale and industrial character while introducing modern interventions necessary for its new function as a kiosk-bar. The design approach focuses on preserving the exterior identity of the signal box, retaining its familiar proportions and historical resonance within the park landscape. At the same time, the interior and immediate surroundings have been adapted to accommodate the needs of a modern food and beverage establishment, creating a seamless dialogue between the historic fabric of the 1960s structure and the fresh, verdant surroundings of the contemporary park.

Situated amidst the newly landscaped greenery of the Jardins de l’Estuaire, "L’Aiguilleuse" now operates as a vibrant gathering spot. Parkgoers strolling along the pathways or relaxing on the lawns can stop by the former signal box for refreshments, enjoying a unique vantage point that connects the leisure of the present with the industrial memory of the past. By turning a building once dedicated to the rigid control of railway traffic into an open, hospitable destination for the community, Studio Téré has highlighted the potential of adaptive reuse in contemporary urban design. The project demonstrates how small-scale industrial relics, often overlooked in large-scale urban regeneration efforts, can be preserved and reinterpreted to enrich the cultural and social fabric of modern cities.

In the heart of the Jardins de l’Estuaire, a newly established public park on the Île de Nantes in France, a distinct piece of industrial heritage has been given a vibrant second life.
