International Television Production Finland

Warner Bros. International Television Production Finland has announced an ambitious new project, the dark comedy series "Body in the Closet," set to star multi-hyphenate performer Axel Åhman. The production, which has already garnered significant attention for its unconventional premise and tonal ambition, is poised to explore the absurdities of human ego and the complexities of interpersonal relationships, all set against the backdrop of a cold, gray Helsinki autumn.

The series centers on Staffan, a character described as a socially awkward country boy who has managed to secure a job in audience services at a prestigious big-city theatre. Deeply embedded in the institution’s history and inner workings, Staffan finds himself harboring a secret, intense crush on a colleague named Betty. His attempts to bridge the romantic divide between them are marked by a painful lack of tact and a series of clumsy, ill-fated social maneuvers. However, the narrative takes a sharp, macabre turn when these efforts lead to his accidental death—specifically, by way of a chainsaw. In a twist that keeps the character central to the story, Staffan does not exit the narrative upon his demise; instead, he returns to haunt Betty, serving as an omnipresent specter throughout the remainder of the series.

For Axel Åhman, an artist best known as a prominent member of the popular comedy troupe KAJ, the role offers a unique departure from his previous work. Åhman, whose career spans writing, screenwriting, comedy, music, and acting, expressed enthusiasm for the challenge of stepping into a script penned by others, noting that he has primarily built his career around his own creative output.

"I found it funny to play a murder victim," Åhman told Variety. "I like it when characters meet an unexpected end, and when writers dare to go darker. Comedy is at its funniest when it dances on the borderline of darkness. We don’t see much dark comedy in the Nordics. When I got the chance to participate, I just had to tag along and see where it headed. It’s also a nice challenge to play someone else’s script. I have mainly played characters from my own writing."

The creative force behind the camera includes director Elin Grönblom and co-writer Josefin Sonck, the latter of whom will also star as the series’ lead, Betty. The duo previously collaborated on the project "Bloodsuckers," establishing a creative partnership defined by a shared interest in genre-bending narratives.

Producer Mia Oikarinen highlighted the precision of the casting, noting that Åhman’s background in comedy writing was an essential asset for capturing the series’ specific, grim tone. "His comic timing and background in writing make him a particularly strong fit for Staffan and for the series’ darkly comic tone," Oikarinen remarked. "He was very happy that we thought of him for the role—and amused that we immediately pictured him as Staffan."

Exploring the Darker Side of Comedy

As the production team gears up for filming, which is slated to begin next autumn, the creators have been clear about their vision for the series. While the presence of a chainsaw-wielding accident and a haunting might suggest a traditional horror-comedy, the creators argue that the show operates in a more nuanced territory.

"I like the genre because it allows you to play and have fun," director Elin Grönblom said. "Horror, or in this case, dark comedy with some killing, is also a welcome form of escapism. We like to see characters do things that we ourselves don’t dare to do, and probably shouldn’t."

Josefin Sonck emphasized the structural similarities between horror and comedy, noting that both genres are fundamentally rooted in the subversion of audience expectations. "Both rely on surprise and playing with the audience’s expectations," Sonck explained. "But this isn’t a ‘horror comedy.’ It’s more about one person’s increasingly desperate life situation, told through dark humor and supernatural elements."

The series, which is being produced with the backing of Svenska YLE, the Swedish-language division of Finland’s public broadcaster YLE, aims to address serious psychological themes through an absurdist lens. Grönblom noted that the show uses the prism of dark humor to examine egocentrism and the fraught dynamics between narcissistic parents and their children.

"Josefin and I are both drawn to dark humor," Grönblom said. "It allows us to take a serious topic—in this case, egocentrism and the relationship between a narcissistic parent and child—and show its absurdity through humor. When you can laugh, perhaps uncomfortably, you can also shine a light on something serious from another angle. The show is set in a visually realistic world: the gray Helsinki autumn. But we exaggerate the characters and the action to create a fast-paced, humorous tone."

A Universal Stage

The narrative is specifically set within the context of the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland, providing a distinct cultural anchor for the story. However, the creators maintain that the themes are universally applicable, transcending the specific linguistic and cultural borders of the region. By utilizing the high-pressure, ego-driven environment of a theatre, the series aims to hold a mirror up to the broader, increasingly self-absorbed nature of modern society.

"We belong to this minority as well, but it’s a world that can be recognized anywhere," Grönblom noted. "Especially the theatre world with its prejudiced, grandiose characters. Since the theme of the series is egocentrism, what better stage to put them on?"

The production team, including Oikarinen, believes that the series holds strong international potential, largely due to its focus on the flaws that define the human condition. "All our characters are driven by their own egos and needs, and often fail to see others around them," Oikarinen observed. "We laugh at the increasingly absurd situations these horrible people put each other through. Sometimes we need to laugh at them to cope with what’s happening around us, especially in this increasingly egocentric—and frankly quite frightening—world."

Sonck echoed this sentiment, framing the show as a combination of three distinct elements: a timely and universal subject matter, a high-stakes plot filled with narrative twists and suspenseful cliffhangers, and a collection of "funny, quirky characters who act out the things we all secretly think but would never admit."

Ultimately, "Body in the Closet" seeks to explore the performative nature of existence. "Our series explores self-absorption, the quest for validation, and our attempts to control how we present ourselves to the world," Sonck concluded. "The theater becomes a symbolic setting for these themes. But it’s also a place where secrets are brought into the spotlight."

With the project moving toward its production phase, the team is focused on delivering a series that manages to be both profoundly unsettling and undeniably humorous, inviting audiences to find relief in the dark, messy, and often ridiculous lives of its central characters. As the autumn filming window approaches, the anticipation continues to build for this exploration of life, death, and the unchecked egos in between.

Warner Bros.
