As the revamped DC Universe continues to take shape under the creative leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran, fresh details are emerging about the projects slated for the expanding cinematic and television landscape. In a wide-ranging new interview, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran provided major updates regarding the upcoming slate, most notably revealing the lead casting for the highly anticipated animated adaptation of Tom King’s acclaimed Mister Miracle comic book run. Alongside the casting news, Safran addressed the production status of Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2 and offered brief insights into other upcoming DC endeavors.

DC Boss Officially Reveals the Mister Miracle Show Has Found Its Leads

Given that James Gunn has integrated comic writer Tom King as one of the central architects of the new DC Universe, it comes as little surprise that several of King’s celebrated graphic novel runs are being translated for the screen. Audiences have already seen his acclaimed 2021 miniseries Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow adapted into a 2026 feature film. Now, attention is shifting toward the television side of the franchise with an upcoming animated series based on King’s profound and psychologically complex 2017–2019 comic run of Mister Miracle.

While concrete news regarding the animated show has been remarkably sparse since its initial announcement last year, DC Studios has officially locked in the actors who will portray the lead heroes. Speaking with IGN, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran revealed the two stars chosen to head the project. Actor Josh Hutcherson, widely known for his roles in franchises like The Hunger Games alongside a massive footprint in internet culture, has been cast as the titular escape artist, Scott Free. Joining him is actress Mackenzie Davis, recognized for her standout performances in Station Eleven and Happiest Season, who will star alongside him as his fierce warrior wife, Big Barda.

Tom King, who recently served as a co-creator on the upcoming HBO series Lanterns, has penned all eight episodes of the Mister Miracle series himself. Safran praised the scripts during the interview, describing the writing as "dynamite."

"It’s a beautiful book and the adaptation is fantastic, so we’re excited about that," Safran said, signaling high confidence in the creative direction of the series.

The Official Synopsis for the DC Show

To give fans a clearer idea of the tone and narrative direction of the animated adaptation, the official synopsis for the DC series outlines the immense trials facing the characters:

"DC

"No prison can hold him. No trap can contain him. He is Scott Free, the worldwide celebrity sensation known as Mister Miracle, and he is the greatest escape artist who ever lived. But can he pull off the ultimate trick – and escape death itself? Something has gone horribly wrong with the perfect life that Scott and his warrior wife Big Barda have built for themselves on Earth. With war raging between their home worlds of Apokolips and New Genesis, Scott’s cruel adoptive father, Darkseid, seems to have finally captured the Anti-Life Equation – the ultimate weapon that will give Darkseid total dominance over the universe. As the mountains of bodies on both sides grow ever higher, only Mister Miracle can stop the slaughter and restore peace. But the terrible power of the Anti-Life Equation may already be at work in his own mind, warping his reality, exposing his long-buried pain, and shattering the fragile happiness he’s found with the woman he loves. And so begins the odyssey of Scott Free, Mister Miracle: a harrowing, hilarious, heart-wrenching journey across the pitfalls of the ordinary and extraordinary as the son of God raised by the devil tries to save his family, his world, and maybe even himself."

Warner Bros. and DC Are Committed to The Batman Part 2

Beyond the announcements surrounding the television slate, Safran addressed ongoing concerns regarding the theatrical side of the DC universe, specifically offering a reassuring update on the status of director Matt Reeves’ The Batman Part 2. Production on the highly anticipated sequel came to a sudden halt earlier this month when Reeves stepped away from the project temporarily to attend to a pressing family matter.

Because there has been no official word on precisely when filming will resume, some industry observers and fans expressed concern that the long-delayed sequel might face further setbacks or potential cancellation. However, when asked directly by IGN whether there was any scenario in which filming would fail to resume, Safran firmly shut down the notion with a concise and definitive "No."

Safran’s firm stance aligns closely with recent comments made by the film’s star, Robert Pattinson. While walking the red carpet for his new film, Primetime, Pattinson offered words of reassurance to anxious fans, stating that the team is dedicated to getting things back on track and "going to figure it all out."

In addition to the updates on The Batman Part 2, Safran touched on several other minor developments within the broader DC ecosystem. He revealed that early development on the Absolute Batman animated series is currently underway, with comic writer Scott Snyder actively working on the scripts. Meanwhile, Safran’s co-head at DC Studios, James Gunn, has yet to officially select his next feature film to direct, though Gunn has previously confirmed that he has already begun writing a brand-new project.
