Literary Hub, one of the prominent digital destinations for book culture and literary commentary, has announced that it is searching for a Senior Editor to help develop, launch, and manage an ambitious new site. Scheduled to go live in the spring of 2027, the upcoming vertical is designed to cover the full, sweeping spectrum of books published each year. From literary and genre fiction to expansive nonfiction, and across categories as diverse as children’s literature, romance, and personal finance, the new platform aims to reflect the wide-ranging tastes of contemporary readers. Furthermore, the publication intends to serve as a communal hub that brings together critical opinions, author perspectives, bookseller insights, librarian expertise, and reader responses under one digital roof.

For media professionals and publishing veterans, the opening represents a rare opportunity to help shape a major digital publication entirely from the ground up. The incoming Senior Editor will join the team well before the public launch, working directly alongside Literary Hub’s senior staff to establish the core editorial voice, standards, workflows, and strategy for the new vertical. Because the pre-launch phase and initial rollout are expected to be fast-paced and crucial to the project’s long-term success, candidates will need to demonstrate exceptional organizational and communication skills, alongside an innate enthusiasm for the sprawling world of books and online media.

In terms of daily execution, the Senior Editor will take on a multifaceted set of responsibilities aimed at maintaining a prolific, high-traffic digital environment. A core component of the role involves managing an extensive editorial calendar operating across three distinct cadences. Daily features will require timely content closely tied to the fast-moving news cycle and major new book releases. Weekly features will focus on regular roundups of new titles and broader emerging book trends. Meanwhile, monthly and seasonal features will span comprehensive previews, best-of lists across various genres and categories, back-to-school roundups, year-end retrospectives, and other tentpole literary moments.

Beyond editorial planning and calendar management, the Senior Editor will be tasked with commissioning and soliciting thoughtful contributions from a wide array of voices, including authors, critics, independent booksellers, librarians, and academics. The position also involves hands-on writing and editing, encompassing articles, critical reviews, newsletters, and curated book roundups. As the vertical expands following its launch, the Senior Editor will also step into a leadership role, managing assistant editors as well as a stable of freelance writers, handling assignments, and overseeing the designated budget.

The position also demands a strong command of digital curation and audience engagement. The Senior Editor will be responsible for creating and overseeing several weekly newsletters that deliver curated literary content directly to readers’ inboxes. Additionally, the editor will collaborate closely with colleagues across Literary Hub’s broader family of digital properties—including the flagship Lit Hub site, CrimeReads, and Book Marks—to coordinate content strategies, cross-promotion efforts, and long-term partnerships. Maintaining a pulse on the publishing industry as a whole and tracking the significance of the thousands of books published annually will remain an ongoing priority for the team.

To meet the demands of this critical role, Literary Hub is seeking candidates who possess at least four years of combined professional experience working within the book publishing industry, book media, and online media environments. Applicants must also have prior experience managing people, whether through formal staff supervision or working closely with freelance contributors. Ideal candidates will exhibit wide-ranging reading habits and the balanced critical judgment necessary to evaluate books on their own unique terms, whether reviewing a complex work of literary fiction, a sweeping romance novel, or a practical guide to personal finance.

In addition to traditional editorial competencies, the ideal candidate must possess a deep familiarity with contemporary online book culture and digital publishing tools. This includes a working familiarity with content management systems, newsletter distribution platforms, and digital analytics tools. Candidates are also expected to bring a solid understanding of audience development, digital marketing, social media strategies, and search engine optimization. Crucially, the publication is looking for someone who grasps the modern challenges facing the publishing industry, particularly the ongoing hurdles related to book discoverability in a crowded digital marketplace. As a nod to the personal passion required for the role, preferred applicants should also have a favorite local independent bookstore and a well-used library card. While not strictly required, existing professional relationships with authors, critics, booksellers, and librarians are considered a valuable nice-to-have asset.

The position offers a fully remote working arrangement, though Literary Hub’s home base remains in New York City. The starting salary for the Senior Editor role is set at $72,000 to $75,000 per year, accompanied by standard health benefits. The target start date for the successful candidate is December 1, 2026, allowing several months of dedicated preparation ahead of the public launch in the spring of 2027.

Candidates interested in applying for the position are required to submit a current resume to Literary Hub’s designated hiring email address. Alongside the standard application materials, applicants must submit three brief pitches for timely book lists. In this context, "timely" refers to lists pegged directly to the current news cycle, a specific seasonal shift, or an ongoing conversation taking place across online literary spaces. Submissions must include a compelling headline and at least three potential book titles per pitch, though full capsule reviews are not necessary for the initial application stage. The official application deadline for the Senior Editor position is November 6, 2026.
