In the heart of the historic Taoyangli Historic District in Jingdezhen, China, an ambitious urban regeneration project has successfully breathed new life into a dense web of aging structures. Designed by WEI+ Design and curated by HAN Shuang, the newly unveiled Zhuozhuo Community transforms a collection of existing residential buildings, former workshops, and traditional narrow alleyways into an open, multifunctional cultural hub. By seamlessly weaving contemporary public functions into a deeply historical urban fabric, the project redefines how historic districts can adapt to modern civic life while fiercely protecting their architectural identity and cultural continuity.

Situated in a uniquely charged location, the Zhuozhuo Community bridges two monumental elements of Jingdezhen’s legendary urban landscape. The site lies directly between Zhongshan North Road—a historic commercial street boasting approximately 600 years of continuous history—and the globally significant Imperial Kiln archaeological site. Taoyangli itself serves as the keeper of the layered urban history of Jingdezhen, a city renowned worldwide as China’s porcelain capital. For centuries, this dense neighborhood was shaped by the rhythms of porcelain production, bustling commerce, and everyday community life, resulting in a tight-knit maze of workshops, traditional residences, and ancient guild halls.

Rather than treating historical preservation as an exercise in turning the district into a static, museum-like artifact, the design approach taken by WEI+ Design focuses on spatial continuity and active community engagement. The architects recognized that the true value of Taoyangli lies not in isolated, pristine buildings, but in the intricate relationships between structures, open courtyards, and narrow pathways. The intervention avoids isolating individual structures as static museum objects, choosing instead to explore how these historic spaces can absorb contemporary functions without sacrificing the patina and character of their long evolution.

The transformation addresses the complex spatial challenges inherent in historic urban quarters. Over hundreds of years, the Taoyangli district accumulated layers of informal additions, structural alterations, and varying architectural styles. WEI+ Design navigated this dense environment by carefully sorting through the built fabric, retaining structurally sound historical elements, and opening up blocked circulation routes to improve pedestrian flow. Through strategic architectural interventions, previously hidden courtyards and neglected corners have been converted into accessible public spaces, inviting residents, artisans, and visitors to step inside and experience the renewed vitality of the district.

At the core of the Zhuozhuo Community project is a commitment to cultural continuity. Jingdezhen’s identity is inextricably bound to the craft of porcelain, and the regeneration of Taoyangli honors this heritage by providing spaces that can accommodate cultural exhibitions, creative workshops, and community gatherings. By introducing modern amenities and flexible open spaces, the design ensures that the neighborhood remains a living, breathing part of the city rather than a preserved relic of the past. The interplay between old brickwork, traditional timber frames, and contemporary interventions creates a tactile dialogue between the history of porcelain manufacturing and the future of urban cultural life.

The project also carefully considers the human scale of the historic district. The narrow alleyways, which once facilitated the movement of goods and people between kilns and commercial stalls, have been preserved and enhanced with thoughtful lighting, improved paving, and integrated landscaping. These pathways now act as the primary arteries of the Zhuozhuo Community, guiding visitors through a sequence of discovery that moves from the bustling commercial energy of Zhongshan North Road into quieter, contemplative pockets of cultural activity.

As cities across the globe grapple with the challenge of modernizing historic centers while retaining local character, the Zhuozhuo Community offers a compelling model for sensitive urban regeneration. By respecting the historical DNA of Jingdezhen while introducing modern structural logic and programmatic flexibility, WEI+ Design has created a thriving cultural destination that honors six centuries of craftsmanship. Published on October 15, 2026, the project stands as a testament to the potential of adaptive reuse in historic districts, proving that ancient neighborhoods can successfully evolve to meet the needs of contemporary communities while safeguarding their irreplaceable heritage.
