"CC had already donated monetarily to our hometown of Vallejo, but we wanted to make sure the money we were donating was going to the right places and making true change," Amber Sabathia explained in an interview. "Starting the foundation seemed the only way to do that."
For CC, the motivation was deeply personal. Having spent his own formative years in a Boys & Girls Club, he developed an enduring affinity for organizations that leverage sports and education to provide a path for youth development. This personal history became the bedrock of the PitCCh In mission, which seeks to enrich the lives of young people through a combination of academic support and athletic opportunity.
Despite the grueling demands of a professional pitching schedule that often kept him on the road for months at a time, CC maintained an active role in the foundation’s operations. He often jokingly refers to the organization as his "fifth child," a testament to the level of emotional and personal investment required to build something that truly endures. "It’s always just kind of been a part of our family," the Hall of Famer noted. "So it was easy to kind of just integrate that part of our lives, have more time, you know, in retirement."

"Living through CC’s career taught me the human side of the business: what a trade feels like for a family, what free agency does to a household, how much trust matters between a player and the people advising him," Amber said. "I lived every high and low alongside him, so I understand what players and their families are going through in a way you cannot learn from a book."
Transitioning from the role of a player’s wife to that of a professional advisor required a significant learning curve. Amber had to master the technical complexities of the industry—the intricacies of contract structures, the nuances of the Collective Bargaining Agreement (CBA), and the high-stakes mechanics of negotiation. Yet, she quickly discovered that the most critical skill for an agent is the ability to listen.
"As a player’s wife, I thought I understood the job, but being the advisor is different," she shared. "You’re helping someone make decisions that affect their family, their future, and their legacy. The trust players place in you is humbling, and I don’t take it lightly." For Amber, this professional responsibility is built on a foundation of loyalty. She approaches her client relationships with a fierce commitment to their success, noting, "My clients are loyal to me, and for that respect, I go hard for them each day. I’m excited for the future of my clients and the careers they have ahead. Being a part of that is an honor."
The Next Chapter
With the recent retirement of CC’s jersey by the Yankees, the spotlight has inevitably returned to his achievements. While this brings added visibility to the PitCCh In Foundation, the Sabathias remain focused on the work itself rather than the accolades.
"We don’t plan stuff around, you know, getting accolades," CC explained. "It’s just whatever’s best for the kids, whatever can work for their schedule and our schedule, and whatever works best for PitCCh In. A lot of stuff that’s been coinciding, which has been great. But it’s not anything we consciously do."
Reflecting on his transition, Sabathia seems remarkably at peace with the shift from being a headline-grabbing superstar to a retired veteran finding new ways to contribute. "All of this stuff has just kind of been coming, you know. It kind of is what it is," he said. "It’s a blessing to have this stuff come. In retirement, you play a long time, and you would hope people will recognize your career. So it’s been a lot of fun to have this stuff. I know my kids are tired of celebrations, but it’s been a lot of fun."
As the Sabathias continue to balance their philanthropic goals with their professional lives, their legacy appears to be shifting from the numbers on a scoreboard to the number of lives they have positively influenced.
