As original gaming hardware continues to age, the practicalities of enjoying retro video games on vintage machines grow increasingly complex. Aging capacitors, degraded display outputs, and compatibility issues with modern high-definition televisions often turn what should be a straightforward nostalgic experience into an exercise in technical frustration. For years, the hardware manufacturer Analogue has worked to bridge this gap by engineering modern, high-grade hardware capable of running decades-old cartridges natively, without the latency and degradation associated with software emulation.
The company famously demonstrated this approach with the launch of the Super Nt in 2017 and the Mega Sg in 2019, systems that quickly earned critical acclaim among collectors and enthusiasts for their hardware-accurate preservation of 16-bit classics. For those who missed out on those initial hardware runs when they originally hit the market, Analogue has announced a major second chance. The company is officially bringing back both beloved systems in significantly improved iterations: the Super Nt+ and the Mega Sg+.
Bring life back to your SNES and Sega Genesis games with the Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+
Like their highly regarded predecessors, the newly announced Super Nt+ and Mega Sg+ are purpose-built consoles that utilize sophisticated Field Programmable Gate Array (FPGA) technology. Rather than relying on software emulation, which simulates hardware behavior through a computer program, FPGA chips are custom-configured to physically replicate the architecture of original video game consoles at a hardware level. This ensures that physical retro cartridges can be read directly and displayed in crisp, high-definition resolution up to 1080p on modern widescreen displays, maintaining authentic performance, timing, and visual fidelity without introducing input lag or graphical artifacts.

The newly upgraded systems introduce several modern conveniences and technical refinements that address community feedback from the original releases. Among the most notable hardware additions are built-in Bluetooth and 2.4 GHz wireless support for controllers, allowing players to cut the cord without sacrificing response time. Additionally, the consoles transition to modern USB-C power standards and introduce a highly requested quality-of-life feature: the ability to swap physical game cartridges in and out without needing to power off the console entirely.
In terms of library compatibility, the Super Nt+ remains a powerhouse for Super Nintendo enthusiasts. The system is fully compatible with over 2,200 Super Nintendo Entertainment System and Super Famicom cartridges, as well as original first-party wired controllers. Meanwhile, the Mega Sg+ offers sweeping coverage for the Sega ecosystem, capable of reading over 2,180 cartridges originally released for the Sega Genesis, Mega Drive, Master System, Game Gear, Mycard Adapter, and SG1000 systems. The Mega Sg+ maintains compatibility with their respective original wired controllers, while also offering seamless integration with the Sega CD accessory.
To ensure that classic physical media remains in optimal condition for use on modern hardware, Analogue is bundling tangible maintenance support directly with the new releases. Each purchased system will ship with two physical cartridge cleaners, and additional cleaning supplies will be made available directly through Analogue’s online store, allowing collectors to properly maintain their classic libraries before inserting them into the upgraded consoles.
The Super Nt+ and the Mega Sg+ are priced at $219.99 each. Pre-orders are scheduled to begin on Monday, October 19, at 11 a.m. ET, with manufacturing shipments slated to begin this December, giving prospective buyers a potential window to secure the hardware ahead of the holiday season.
Buyers should note that physical game controllers are not included in the box with either console. To play games out of the box on the Super Nt+ or Mega Sg+, users will need to utilize their original vintage controllers, source compatible third-party wireless controllers, or purchase standalone 8BitDo wireless controllers directly from Analogue for $29.99.
