In the southern zone of Porto Alegre, Brazil, architectural studio Oficina Conceito Arquitetura has completed Casa FG, a contemporary residence that redefines urban living by seamlessly blending topography, architecture, and natural scenery. Conceived as a peaceful urban refuge, the home takes full advantage of its challenging 16-foot slope, turning a potentially difficult landscape feature into the central design concept of the entire project. Through thoughtful planning and a deep sensitivity to the surrounding environment, the architects have crafted a living space where the striking views of the Guaíba River take center stage, establishing a continuous dialogue between the indoor spaces and the water beyond.
The property occupies a unique site that carries a distinct sense of history and community. Previously the location of a house that evoked the relaxed, sprawling atmosphere of a country estate, the plot retains a close-knit neighborhood character more typically associated with smaller, intimate towns. Finding such a peaceful and community-oriented pocket within a bustling urban context is a rare and valuable discovery, providing the ideal backdrop for a modern family home. The clients sought a sanctuary that could accommodate a generous and inviting social area, comfortable private bedrooms, a refreshing swimming pool, a sprawling terrace, and a dedicated pool house for entertaining and relaxation. Oficina Conceito Arquitetura rose to this challenge, delivering a design that honors both the scale of the landscape and the intimate spirit of the neighborhood.
By embracing the terrain’s dramatic 16-foot drop, the architectural team was able to structure the residence across multiple levels, ensuring that nearly every major space benefits from optimized sightlines toward the breathtaking Guaíba River. This terraced approach not only minimizes the structural disruption of the natural ground but also creates a dynamic spatial journey for anyone moving through the home. Public zones and private retreats are carefully positioned to capture different facets of the surrounding views, balancing openness with a sense of security and domestic tranquility.
The integration of outdoor living spaces was a primary objective throughout the design process. The generous terrace serves as an extension of the main social zones, effectively blurring the boundaries between interior comfort and the open-air environment of southern Brazil. Positioned to take advantage of natural sunlight and cooling river breezes, the terrace flows effortlessly toward the swimming pool and the adjacent pool house. This layout encourages an active, outdoor-oriented lifestyle, allowing the family to transition easily from indoor gatherings to sunlit poolside relaxation against the backdrop of the river landscape.
Materiality and form play crucial roles in anchoring Casa FG to its site. The architecture employs a contemporary aesthetic characterized by clean lines, expansive glazing, and tactile surfaces that converse with the surrounding greenery and earth tones of the slope. Large glass panels invite abundant natural light deep into the home’s core while framing the shifting colors of the sky and water throughout the day. Meanwhile, solid structural elements provide privacy where needed and anchor the building firmly into the descending topography.
The completion of Casa FG highlights Oficina Conceito Arquitetura’s ability to navigate complex site conditions while maintaining a strong commitment to human-centric design. By preserving the nostalgic, village-like charm of the neighborhood and marrying it with bold, topography-driven modern architecture, the studio has created a timeless urban refuge. Published on October 19, 2026, and curated by Susanna Moreira, the project stands out as a sophisticated example of how contemporary residential design can respect natural contours and elevate everyday living through a profound connection to nature.
