In the picturesque rural setting of Zhongxin Village, architecture firm Studio 10 has completed a striking new community intervention known as "The iLOOminate Public Toilet." Serving as a pivotal supporting facility for the broader South Kunlun–Luofu Mountain Architectural Art Programme, the project centers on the comprehensive renovation and upgrading of the village’s original public restroom facility. Rather than erasing the site’s history, the design carefully preserves the inherent spatial context of the location while breathing new architectural life into a humble yet essential piece of rural infrastructure.
The project addresses a fascinating social dynamic uncovered during the architects’ preliminary field research. While contemporary rural development has brought modern private bathrooms to many homes in Zhongxin Village, researchers discovered that local residents still maintain a strong preference for visiting the village’s sole public toilet. This enduring habit highlights the public restroom’s role not merely as a functional necessity, but as a traditional social anchor within the community fabric—a space for casual encounters and daily neighborhood interaction. Recognizing this cultural significance, Studio 10 approached the commission with a deep respect for local customs, aiming to elevate a utilitarian building into an inviting architectural landmark that enriches public life.
At the heart of the architectural strategy is a thoughtful engagement with the surrounding landscape and natural elements. The building features a distinctive single-slope roof geometry that purposefully opens up toward the lush northern mountains, framing dramatic views of the natural topography for visitors and seamlessly integrating the built form with its environment. This dynamic roofline not only creates a strong visual identity for the public facility but also optimizes the interior spatial volume, allowing for enhanced vertical clearance and an airy, breathable atmosphere.
To achieve superior environmental comfort and sustainability, Studio 10 utilized locally sourced hollow bricks throughout the construction. These regional building materials play a critical functional role by naturally drawing ambient daylight deep into the interior spaces while simultaneously facilitating cross-ventilation. By harnessing the power of multi-dimensional borrowed light, the design minimizes the need for artificial daytime illumination, reducing energy consumption and creating a soft, shifting play of shadows and light across the interior surfaces.
