Marvel Television is reaffirming its commitment to live-action television with the announcement of a brand-new series, Zodiac, slated to arrive on Disney Plus in 2028. The upcoming project was officially unveiled during a panel at New York Comic Con, bringing a fresh piece of puzzle to the ever-expanding Marvel Cinematic Universe and proving that the studio’s television division remains active despite recent shifts in its production strategy.
Brad Winderbaum, Marvel Studios’ head of streaming, television, and animation, confirmed the existence of Zodiac at the convention, providing the first major details about the mysterious project. According to Winderbaum, the show is being developed as a high-stakes "spy thriller" and is scheduled to begin principal photography in London in the spring of 2027. Casting for the series is already underway, indicating that the production is moving steadily through its early development phases ahead of its distant release window.
While specific plot details remain under wraps, the title immediately draws from rich corners of Marvel Comics lore. In the source material, "Zodiac" refers to a series of criminal organizations whose members base their identities and motifs on the Western zodiac, frequently operating under the leadership of a character known as Taurus. Historically, these syndicates have served as formidable adversaries to mainstream heroes like the Avengers and the intelligence agency SHIELD.
Eagle-eyed fans analyzing the initial announcements have already begun dissecting the visual branding of the series. The show’s title card appears to incorporate an ‘O’ shaped like a zodiac wheel, alongside an ‘A’ that subtly integrates the eagle motif traditionally associated with SHIELD’s iconic emblem. However, Marvel Studios has not yet confirmed whether the television series will draw a direct line to these classic comic book supervillains or forge an entirely original narrative within the broader MCU framework.
The comic book history of the Zodiac moniker also extends to other complex storylines. In one notable narrative arc, the Zodiac was composed of the leaders of various clandestine organizations—including Hydra, SHIELD, and the Hand—brought together by a man using the moniker Aries. This leader was ultimately revealed to be none other than Leonardo da Vinci, who had assembled the group in an effort to track down and reclaim a series of dangerously powerful artifacts. That particular roster featured a mix of legacy characters, including Nick Fury and his younger brother Jake Fury, Dum Dum Dugan of the Howling Commandos, Baron Strucker, and the Hydra agent Daniel Whitehall, better known as Kraken. Whether the new Disney Plus series will tap into these historical espionage roots or adapt the concept for the modern era remains to be seen.
The announcement of Zodiac arrives at a time of notable transition for Marvel Television, which has noticeably scaled back its output of new live-action productions in recent years as the studio recalibrates its streaming strategy. Earlier this year, Marvel announced a second season for the upcoming Disney Plus series Wonder Man, only to make the surprising decision to cancel the renewal just a few months later. Meanwhile, long-anticipated follow-ups to established live-action hits like Moon Knight, Hawkeye, and Ms. Marvel have remained absent from the studio’s immediate release calendar, prompting speculation across the fandom regarding the future of live-action television at Marvel Studios.
Despite these shifts and past reports suggesting that the studio might step away from live-action streaming series, the Marvel Television group currently maintains between three and five shows in active development. The upcoming slate includes the third and final season of Daredevil: Born Again, which is scheduled to premiere next year, alongside the debut of the new series VisionQuest, set to arrive on Disney Plus next week.
At the same time, Marvel Television continues to maintain a robust presence on the animation front. Alongside the upcoming second season of Your Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man, which is set to premiere in January, the studio’s animation arm is actively developing a third season of the critically acclaimed revival X-Men ’97. Additionally, a trio of stand-alone Marvel Zombies specials are currently in the pipeline, bound for future release on Disney Plus.
As casting continues in London and pre-production ramps up ahead of its 2027 filming start, Zodiac represents a fresh strategic bet for Marvel Television as the studio carefully plots its long-term live-action future on streaming.
