Elon Musk and Neuralink executive Shivon Zilis have abruptly ended their romantic relationship, bringing an unexpected halt to a partnership that has produced four children and sparked widespread public interest. The sudden split has immediately cast uncertainty over whether Zilis will continue residing in the billionaire’s reported $35 million Austin, Texas, residential compound, where she and the children have been living.

Zilis made the surprising breakup public through an emotional post shared on the social media platform X on October 2. In her statement, she revealed that the end of their relationship materialized with startling speed, coming just days after the couple had been exchanging affectionate messages.

"It’s hard to go from in love to let go in a week with no warning, but that’s just how it is sometimes," she wrote to her followers.

To underscore just how abrupt the transition was, the 40-year-old Neuralink director shared a screenshot of a text exchange between herself and the world’s richest man. The messages, dated September 24, showed a warm interaction in which Zilis told Musk she had thoroughly enjoyed seeing him for breakfast earlier in the day and expressed her love for him.

Musk responded in kind to the sentiment. In the same text conversation, the billionaire mentioned that he would have gladly invited her to a dinner involving Chinese President Xi Jinping had he realized that significant others were permitted to attend the high-profile gathering.

Little more than a week after that text exchange, however, Zilis confirmed that the romance had completely dissolved.

Despite the evident heartbreak and the abrupt nature of the separation, Zilis made it clear in her public statements that she still harbors deep care for Musk. She expressed her desire to maintain an amicable dynamic as the pair navigate the responsibilities of raising their four young children together.

"I’m hurting, but care deeply about E and will always be cheering for his happiness," she wrote, adding later in her comments that she genuinely hopes the two can remain "great friends and coparents."

The former couple shares a growing family. They welcomed twins Strider and Azure in 2021, followed by a daughter named Arcadia in 2024. Most recently, the arrival of their youngest son, Seldon Lycurgus, was publicly announced in February 2025.

Beyond the personal dynamics of the breakup, the end of the romance introduces a compelling real estate mystery centered around Austin, Texas. Observers and real estate followers are now asking what the split means for Zilis’ reported living arrangements inside Musk’s sprawling Texas property portfolio.

Zilis has previously been reported to reside alongside the couple’s children within a gated Austin community. That neighborhood has frequently been linked to Musk’s ambitious and widely discussed plans to create a unified family compound for members of his extensive family.

Reports regarding this unusual residential setup first surfaced publicly in October 2024. At the time, a report published by the New York Times claimed that Musk had quietly acquired multiple residential properties with a combined value of approximately $35 million in Austin. According to that reporting, the billionaire’s ultimate goal was to bring several of his children—along with some of their respective mothers—together into neighboring residences.

Sources familiar with the matter indicated at the time that Musk believed having his younger children living in such close geographic proximity would foster deeper relationships among them. Additionally, the setup would theoretically allow the busy tech executive to divide his time more efficiently among his family members.

Although Musk publicly denied the initial reporting regarding the compound concept when it first broke, subsequent investigations by other major media outlets continued to tie him to the project. Reporting from the Wall Street Journal later linked the billionaire directly to the Austin acquisitions, alleging that his longtime money manager, Jared Birchall, had actively assisted in securing the real estate holdings for the multi-property initiative.

That subsequent reporting also corroborated that Zilis and her children with Musk were indeed living inside the gated community, while Musk split his time between the properties and his demanding corporate schedules at Tesla, SpaceX, and X.

Zilis herself provided a glimpse into their domestic life earlier this year. While offering testimony during Musk’s high-profile legal battle with OpenAI, she noted that she and Musk frequently lived together while traveling and routinely spent dedicated family time together at their home base in Austin.

To date, there has been no indication from Zilis or her representatives that she plans to pack up and leave the Austin community in the wake of the breakup. She has not publicly addressed whether the separation will prompt any immediate modifications to her housing situation or the daily routines of her children.

At the same time, the broader future of Musk’s reported compound has always remained somewhat murky and complicated.

Musk’s former partner Grimes, with whom the billionaire shares three children, was also reportedly approached about relocating to the family compound setup but ultimately declined to participate. Similarly, Ashley St. Clair, who has publicly stated that Musk fathered her son Romulus, has claimed that the tech mogul encouraged her to spend time in the Austin residential cluster as well.

Musk’s own housing journey has seen numerous shifts over the years. In 2020, the billionaire famously announced that he intended to divest himself of virtually all his physical possessions, declaring publicly that he wanted to "own no house."

The following year, he clarified that his primary residence was a relatively modest, prefabricated dwelling located near SpaceX’s operational facilities in South Texas, which he rented directly from the aerospace company. However, subsequent real estate reporting has consistently tied him to a much broader and more valuable collection of properties located in and around Austin.

Whatever ultimately transpires regarding Zilis’ living arrangements within the property portfolio, her public statements suggest that she remains committed to preserving a functional, cooperative family environment with Musk.

In her reflections on their time together, Zilis described the home life that she, Musk, and their children built as a vital source of stability and personal happiness for the tech mogul, helping to anchor him amid the relentless pressures of running multiple multi-billion-dollar enterprises. She has consistently emphasized that regardless of the romantic status of their relationship, their four children remain the most important and enduring result of the years they spent together.

For now, whether the sudden end of the romance will ultimately require Zilis to bid farewell to Musk’s reported Austin compound remains entirely unclear as the family adjusts to their new dynamic.
