Action star Alan Ritchson may soon find himself trading the rugged roads of his television career for the chaotic, dystopian battlefields of Super Earth. According to industry reports, the Reacher breakout is currently in active talks with Sony Pictures to headline the upcoming live-action film adaptation of the hit sci-fi video game franchise Helldivers.

The high-profile role was previously slated for Jason Momoa. However, Momoa officially exited the project earlier in June, citing creative differences with the production team. With the vacancy left behind, Ritchson has emerged as the studio’s primary choice to step into the boots of the franchise’s heavily armed, hyper-patriotic soldiers, potentially reuniting with a filmmaker he has worked with previously.

What is Alan Ritchson known for?

Ritchson has experienced a meteoric rise in Hollywood over recent years, largely anchored by his star-turning performance as the formidable Jack Reacher in Prime Video’s smash-hit action series Reacher. Building heavily on the momentum and global popularity of the show, the actor has increasingly commanded major leading roles across both television and feature films.

His recent slate of projects includes starring roles in the gritty action-thriller Motor City and Netflix’s military sci-fi feature War Machine. Long before establishing himself as a premier modern action star, Ritchson built a diverse resume with notable appearances in television and film, including early work on Smallville, the cult-classic collegiate comedy Blue Mountain State, DC’s Titans, Michael Bay’s Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles reboot in 2014, and The Hunger Games: Catching Fire. His imposing physical presence and proven capability to shoulder large-scale action franchises make him a natural fit for the bombastic tone of Helldivers.

What do we know about the Helldivers movie?

The cinematic adaptation of Helldivers was first officially announced by Sony at CES in 2025, generating immediate excitement among fans of the cooperative third-person shooter franchise. The project later received a high-profile showcase during Sony’s theatrical presentation at CinemaCon in April 2026, signaling that the studio views the property as a major theatrical pillar.

'Reacher' Star in Talks to Lead 'Helldivers' Movie

The foundational screenplay for the adaptation was penned by Gary Dauberman, a seasoned writer known for his work on major genre films, including the modern cinematic adaptations of Stephen King’s It as well as the Annabelle horror franchise. Directorial duties belong to Justin Lin, renowned for his blockbuster work on the Fast & Furious franchise. Notably, Lin and Ritchson share a professional history, having previously collaborated on Fast X. In addition to directing, Lin will serve as a producer on the Helldivers film alongside Hutch Parker and PlayStation Productions head Asad Qizilbash.

While Sony has kept specific plot details tightly under wraps, the film is expected to faithfully mirror the core premise of Arrowhead Game Studios’ source material. If the movie follows the trajectory of the original Helldivers and its massively successful sequel, Helldivers 2, audiences can anticipate a story that follows the "elite" soldiers of Super Earth as they embark on suicidal missions to fight alien factions—often initiating conflicts themselves under the guise of spreading managed democracy.

Both video games are celebrated by players for their biting, dark political satire, drawing heavy inspiration from Paul Verhoeven’s seminal 1986 film adaptation of Starship Troopers. Within this universe, the human faction is unmistakably portrayed as a satirical, fascist regime wrapped in red, white, and blue propaganda. A central point of interest among fans and critics alike will be whether the major Hollywood adaptation embraces this sharp satirical commentary or pivots toward a more conventional, straightforward action blockbuster.

The Helldivers feature film is currently scheduled to land in theaters on November 10, 2027.

The film is just one piece of a sprawling slate of video game adaptations currently moving through development at Sony. The company’s multimedia strategy continues to expand aggressively across both film and television. Among the most prominent projects in the pipeline is a live-action God of War series for Prime Video, which recently confirmed the casting of Dave Bautista as the iconic Spartan warrior Kratos.

Additionally, Sony is actively developing feature film adaptations based on celebrated PlayStation intellectual properties including Death Stranding, Bloodborne, and Horizon Zero Dawn. Other transmedia efforts include a Ghost of Tsushima anime project, alongside the ongoing production and expansion of HBO’s critically acclaimed adaptation of The Last of Us.
