Every season at Self-Portrait begins with an informal exercise in creative play. Designer Han Chong gathers his design team around a sprawling table layered with an eclectic assortment of past samples, vintage finds, and carefully printed reference images to see what kind of creative sparks might fly. During a recent preview of his Spring 2027 ready-to-wear collection, Chong ran his fingers over the laser-etched paisley pattern of a fit-and-flare denim minidress. The garment, it turned out, traced its lineage directly back to a secondhand bandana that had been tossed onto the table during one of these exploratory brainstorming sessions.
That single, unassuming piece of fabric proved remarkably productive for the design room, giving rise to an expansive family of garments that included structured bomber jackets, playful playsuits, fluid silk wrap-skirt dresses, wide-flung trousers, and contemporary swimwear. According to Chong, the studio routinely banks a wealth of new ideas from these initial fittings, letting them sit and develop at their own pace. It then becomes a matter of intuition and timing as to when those concepts are ultimately refined and introduced to the brand’s loyal customer base.
The Spring 2027 lineup brought many of these long-incubated experiments to the forefront, leaning heavily on the distinct technical specialisms and craftsmanship found across China’s premier textile manufacturing hubs. Among the standout pieces was a featherlight pink checked lace jacket, meticulously finished with delicate tulle petals framing its edges. In another nod to high-level technical execution, hundreds of hotfixed tiles were arranged by hand to form abstract floral patterns across a pair of striking evening dresses. Sharp-eyed fans of pop artist Olivia Dean might readily recognize the intricate technique from custom performance pieces Chong previously designed for the singer. Elsewhere in the collection, knitted bouclé skirt sets were elevated with custom enamel buttons, the designs for which were generated using advanced digital scans.
While there was an abundance of intricate surface detail for fashion enthusiasts to examine up close, the underlying silhouettes remained refreshingly straightforward and wearable. Chong noted that achieving the right balance is a deliberate creative choice. The clothing features just enough detail to feel special and distinctive, but not so much that it becomes intimidating to the everyday wearer. Therefore, designers must deliberately temper avant-garde touches with familiar wardrobe staples.
This philosophy explained the inclusion of a robust suite of denim pieces, predominantly crafted from Tencel and fashioned into versatile blouson jackets, breezy capri pants, and a sweeping godet skirt. These items offered a decidedly less daunting financial and stylistic proposition at the cash register. Denim has long served a strategic purpose within the brand’s commercial ecosystem. Chong explained that denim is deliberately priced as an accessible entry point for a younger audience that desperately wants to be part of the Self-Portrait community, but might not otherwise be able to afford the label’s higher-tier occasionwear.
A similarly pragmatic and consumer-friendly mindset guided Chong’s latest collaboration with the Australian eyewear label Le Specs. The partnership yielded a series of wraparound and rectangular sunglasses characterized by a pronounced V-dip plunging sharply over the bridge of the nose. Explaining his aversion to exorbitant price tags for everyday accessories, Chong remarked that he does not believe in expensive sunglasses simply because he always manages to misplace his own.
Significantly more precious, however, were the accessories designed to anchor the collection’s evening looks. The handbag offering featured striking purses inspired by the timeless elegance of Waterford crystal and Wedgwood pottery, alongside striped rattan numbers complete with natural bamboo handles and leather flower charms. These pieces continued the season’s overarching emphasis on rich surface embellishment and tactile contrast.
When paired with the collection’s pared-back occasionwear, these accessories achieve an effortless air of sophistication. Key ready-to-wear pieces designed to complement the accessories include a scarf-draped column dress in liquid lilac viscose, a delicate fil coupé gown featuring spaghetti straps and tiered ruffles cascading at the hips, and an abbreviated charcoal twill blazer dress that reinterprets traditional tailoring through a modern evening lens. To emphasize the originality of the accessories line, Chong pulled a python-effect cigarette bag from his personal belongings—complete with a built-in mirror that he had brought along on a recent holiday to Paphos—noting with a smile that the conversation-starting piece had proved to be a major talking point at dinner parties throughout his travels.
